Whereas until recently, more or less all heart valve procedures were performed by conventional open heart surgery, again this is an area where some keyhole, minimally invasive or catheter-based treatments may be appropriate for selected patients.
The majority of Dr Pegge's patients who require valve procedures undergo aortic valve replacement, sometimes with coronary artery bypass grafting carried out at the same time; with mitral valve repair or replacement being the second most common valve procedure performed.
Dr Pegge's patients with valve problems who may be better off with, for instance a ‘TAVI’ (trans-cutaneous aortic valve implant) rather than conventional valve surgery, undergo assessment with a specific cardiac catheter protocol in the catheter lab at either Worthing Hospital or at the Sussex Cardiac Centre, and are discussed at a dedicated multi-disciplinary heart valve team meeting.
Operations and valve procedures can be undertaken at the Sussex Cardiac Centre or at centres in London.
